Who knew a little innocent photo editing could lead to so much drama? Kate Middleton's recent photoshop fail, however, proves that nothing gets past internet sleuths. After Kate posted a seemingly innocuous family photo to social media for U.K. Mother's Day, royal fans were quick to point out a few of the picture's inconsistencies. Photo agencies and publications took down the image because the image was "manipulated," and Kate then apologized to followers, saying, "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing."
According to the Times, a palace insider said that Middleton felt "awful" about the whole ordeal and "told aides that she wanted to come clean."
The publication added that aides were surprised by the image's "existence" altogether, as "for weeks" they had been discussing "how and when they might release an image of the princess."

The source added that when making changes to the photo, Middleton "tried to make it the best it could be, but "after the backlash, she decided to clear the air with a statement because she believes "honesty is the best policy."
The Princess of Wales initially posted the image (which, by the way, is still up on social media) of herself surrounded by her and Prince William's three kids, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte, on Sunday in honor of U.K. Mother's Day. "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months," she captioned the post, referring to her surgery recovery. "Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day. C"
Associated Press (and other outlets) released a "kill" notification saying they suspected that "the source [the palace] has manipulated the image."
The rest of the princess's apology statement read, "I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C."
